Allante' Atlanta Car Club
Memorial Day Cruise

Saturday May 20, 2017 @ 9:30AM

Greetings Allante' Members,

Although we were going to cruise to the National Prisoner of War Museum in Andersonville, GA, the drive would have been in excess of 3-1/2 hours. That's normally our yardstick for overnight cruises. So, we opted for going to the Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliette, GA for a delicious lunch at the famous Whistle Stop Cafe! We will save the Prisoner of War Museum for another cruise.

Therefore, we will meet at the McDonalds at 10 am for a rest stop after our driving adventure on I-285 and I-20. From McDonalds we head on to Monticello, GA (about 30-40 minutes) for a look see there at the Courthouse where the trial scenes were filmed for "My Cousin Vinny". We'll see what else there is to the small village and then on to Juliette, GA and the famous WHISTLE STOP CAFE.

The very small town of Juliette offers some quaint shops, and the movie set for "Fried Green Tomatoes" and a few other movies. The highlight of our visit is the Whistle Stop Cafe. The Cafe was built for the movie set and remains a popular tourist area today. We will meander around the town after lunch and then head to Jarrell Plantation for a tour. We will be able to head home in the afternoon, using multiple routes (I-75 for a somewhat fast getaway, for example).

We were planning an additional visit in Macon to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Museum but I have since learned that the Museum closed in June 2011 due to lack of attendance. How did that happen? Oh my! The exhibits are now being housed at the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, the University of West Georgia and in private collections. The Inductee and Awards Ceremony is still held annually but usually in or near Atlanta.

So. come join us for a pleasant day in rural Georgia, a visit to several movie filming sites in Monticello, gathering the history of Sherman's March to the Sea, as well as some of the post Civil War hisory at Jarrell's Plantation. BUT, save your appetite for those Fried Green Tomatoes!!

We look forward to seeing you.
